The Keepers

Oaxaca, Mexico

The relationship between people, plants, and land in this part of the world is one of the oldest stories on earth – taking place some 8,000 years ago with the domestication of corn from wild grasses.  Farmers like Serafin and his wife Mercedes, are part of a generation of farmers in the Oaxacan Countryside who have relied on the knowledge and experience passed down over thousands of years by their ancestors. They are known by some as the “keepers”, who keep alive the knowledge of this relationship between culture and land.
